  • HVDA 5-speed conversion kit

I got a call from Moss yesterday evening and they are now selling the HVDA kits. I can finally get my engine and transmission remounted in the chassis.

What's the markup over what Hermann used to sell them for?
    I'm really not that interesting...

I don't know if the price is the same for all models, but the kit for my '71 is $1999.

So it's without the W58 tranny, unlike their kits for other makes? I think most or all of those were more $ and included a gearbox.

The guy asked if I already had a transmission and since I did, I didn't inquire about their options. I assume they would either leave it up to you, or recommend someone like Jim Cox or the other guys that Herman recommended.

So broadly comparable iirc. Nice that they stepped up to do this.

The invoice lists it as the HVDA 5-speed conversion, but I don't think that it is on their site yet. I think they are contacting anyone that was on the "interested in buying a kit" list when Herman died first. They were making some revisions to the installation instructions this week and I was told that it should ship next week.

What are you asking for the tranny

So by the time you get a used W58 it comes to about the same as a rebuilt A or J type from Quantum with more gears. I thought it would be cheaper.

I bought one from Herman but would like to see what they have changed in the installation instructions if you are willing to share!

I got the transmission mated to the engine and both installed in the chassis last weekend. I have to say that Herman did an outstanding job in his design. The only issues that I ran into, is the the adapter plug that came with the kit was too large. I spoke with Leif @ Moss Motors and he immediately sent out a smaller diameter plug. Apparently there is a plug for transmissions with the sleeve still in the shift lever housing and one for the transmissions that have had it removed. The other issue is with the mid-exhaust mount. Because the old transmission mounting plate is no longer used, there is nothing to attach the mount to. It is not a big deal...I am going to fabricate another one that will work with the new mounts.

I have to say that Moss was great to work with, especially Leif, as well as Jim Cox who supplied the transmission. If anyone is interested in doing the conversion and do not have a transmission, I would HIGHLY recommend Jim. The transmission that I received was clean, the shafts seem tight and he went out of his way to get me a transmission delivered. He has been very quick in responding to any questions that I had.
