  • TR250/5 TR69 distributor anomalies

We have a double bolt clamp assembly for our distributors, similar to the "part#11" pictured below (I know this one is a TR4 for the clamp assembly pictures the same.) where as the later TR6's have a single bolt clamp assembly. Aside from the double bolts, the hole for the distributor is visibly smaller. Instead of, as with later TR6's, the clamp riding up on the raised portion or "collar" of the distributor base, it rides below the raised portion and acts as a "spacer" the distributor rides on top of between the block and the collar. This rides the distributor ~1/8" out of the block pulling the dog drive up. This really doesn't seem like a good idea to me. From what I can tell the TR250/5 distributors fit the same. Both my TR69 and my assumed "unmolested" parts motor mount this same way. Again riding the distributor the thickness of the clamp up from seating. Can anyone confirm this is correct?

The whole fit-up of the distributor to the TR6 is pretty complex. I am using a different cam but I wanted to retain the stock look so I decided to buy a second dizzy and have it rebuilt with a new curve to exploit the new cam. The nee dizzy came from eBay and it was a bit of a disaster. It was an early dizzy with the vacuum advance / retard units. But it had the TR4 clamp. It took me a long time to figure out that this was the wrong clamp and that it wouldn’t work with the TR6 Engine. There are shims “tracing paper thin” that are use to set the height of the distributor pedestal. This sets how the dizzy interfaces with the drive dog on the distributor. All of this need careful setup.

Thanks Cygan! You know, I'm seeing a pattern here with the TR4 clamp. Both my 69's had them with you being a third. Odd. I'm trying the later model single bolt clamp.
