  • Moss shipping charges etc.?

I recently bought a few items from Moss—a fuel pump, distributor cap and rotor, and a Pertronix igniter. All of it would have fit in a Medium Flat Rate Priority Mail box, which costs $12.80 at commercial rates. Yet Moss charged me $29 for UPS ground. To cap it off, I just discovered a one dollar charge on my debit for "credit authorization." Has anyone had similar experiences? I find this pretty insulting.

Like many of the part suppliers and not just auto parts shipping cost is based on the price...not size, weight or distance.
You can look that up in advance.
According to the chart in Moss for 28.99, your parts must have cost between 150.01 to 200.00.
I don't know how 'debit' works; maybe Moss could explain that part..

Did you not see or ask about the shipping charge on your order before checking out? If you feel like you’ve been wronged, call their customer service line and talk it through with them. What Ken said goes for pretty much all of them.

Yes, I did see the shipping charges at checkout and thought they seemed very high compared to other things I've purchased from other vendors. I mostly shrugged it off until I got the one-dollar charge for the "credit authorization," which I have never, ever seen before. It just seems like a little extra gouge. Calculating shipping by price alone makes no sense to me. Thanks very much for the heads-up about the shipping chart; that will help me decide whether to go ahead with an order or not.

You need to talk to customer service. They'll probably rescind the credit authorization charge if you sound upset enough.

I think the shipping charge is outrageous, too, but what ya gonna do when you need the part?

Talk about outrageous takes- somebody just ripped me off for a whole hour.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Daylight Saving Time either, Walt.
Jonathan, keep an eye on TRF. For instance, this weekend..free shipping on orders over 100.00
            There's always a sale of some sort..subscribe.

I just ordered some special bolts, from Moss.
I would have included them with a related order from BPNW, but the bolts were out of stock.
In view of this topic but suspecting what I'd find in advance I went ahead and compared price and shipping combination from Moss, TRF, Victoria British, and the Little British Car Company.....the difference, if any, was pennies.
Moss has good service and good as any as far as the products I've ordered...but when on sale TRF is hard to beat.
Anyway 11.92 for parts, 5.99 shipping and handling...Like ebay stuff, 19 dollars and FREE SHIPPING might have sounded better...but it is what it is.

The more you shop, the more you save!
Moss has a sale going on,they want you to spend more to save, but you will pay more for the shipping,so what do you really do you save

Here's another thought. If you have a local British Car shop you might be able to order thru them. We have a very good local place that places orders once or twice a week so it normally doesn't take much longer (and they frequently have it there). Sure, I pay a bit more for the part to order thru them but it pales in comparison compared to having the part shipped to me direct and paying the shipping bill.

                      Hmmmmm....

You want to hear a shipping story that will put it all in perspective.

I wanted to order some "Spin Doctors" tile leveling system because I'm tiling my bathroom downstairs. It looked pretty slick. But I need lots of them. So I called Contractors Direct and ordered what I needed. The total cost for the material was going to be $254.00 US. Now I live in Toronto Canada. To ship it to me was going to cost $284.00 US. (Yes, you read that correct.) The box is roughly 2 feet square by 1.5 feet high and does not weigh that much because it's all plastic. And I would still need to pay taxes on top of that.

                      Here's the good part......

I could ship it anywhere in the USA for $12.95 US.

So I had it shipped to CBI which is basically a giant warehouse in Niagara Falls NY and then drove 1.5 hours down to pick them up (along with some other stuff I ordered.) I just could not fathom how shipping could go from $12.95 to $284.00 for the same parcel.

Doug, I used to use CBI as well but as of about the past year and a half I’ve been using Cross Border Pickups. No need to venture down across the border anymore.

                        Cheers,
