  • What are folks paying for a complete engine rebuild these days?

Just wondering what a complete engine rebuild should cost. I need one soon. Thanks, Jim

Well, 4 years ago, doing pretty much all the assembly myself, with the help and advice from many here on the forums, I think I spent about $4000 in parts and machine work. New pistons, rings, cam, timing gears and chain, rebuilt carbs, recurved dizzy, lightened flywheel, hi-torque starter, various and sundry gaskets etc.

Back in 2011 (I think) I paid around $7K to have my engine rebuilt from the ground up.

Machine work as well as cam bearings installed. New pistons, rings, cam, timing gears and chain, valves, tappets, etc (pretty much if it was a moving part it was replaced).

Much of the cost will be in labor and machine work. If you are planning to do the work you will need things like a dial indicator, micrometers, magnetic mounts for the measuring devices and the like just to figure out how much machining you are facing. I was lucky to get away with what I feel was the bare minimum. New rings and bearings, all new gaskets, carb rebuild kits, starter and ignition parts, water pump. I had the flywheel machined for $100 and the crank polished, balanced, and only the mains cut to the next size for $150. My cylinder walls were good and just needed honing. Bought a better cam, used in great shape on ebay, same for the oil pump. All in including other peoples labor about $1500. I would guess that the labor in a shop would come in at about 3K to 4K before installation if you deliver the engine to a shop. You might also address clutch and accessories, radiator, fuel pump, it does tend to add up. I think the military calls it "mission creep". It took me about 2 months of part time work and waiting for the machined parts to arrive.

        Good Luck!!

I just had one done, I didn't do any of the work other than supply the parts.
It was a little over $5000 parts and labour. I live in Ontario ,Canada

Anyone responding should include city & state where work was done..... I bet the prices can vary by 30-40%depending on where you live.

              Good point on location.

Mine was done on the north shore of Chicago so...not the least expensive area in the country

I also did none of the work. My engine failed and the car ended up being trailered to the shop.

I spent about $5,000 back in 2008 to do mine completely. If you want to see everything that was done, step by step, start here and go down the page on the left side for each section of the engine:

Just got my engine rebuilt in June. I purchased uprated Cam, flywheel, cam bearings and new timing chain. Machine shop did all the rest so they charged me $3,500 for the rebuild. So the $5,000 figure is probably a good one depending on the condition of the engine.
