  • Coolant Hoses - Samco

Hopefully this is the last set of hoses "The Slut" will ever need. Some of you might know that at the recent TRials in St. Louis, my 72 decided to "spew" from the top radiator hose. (thanks again Hope for spotting that & Doug Thayer for loaning me a replacement)

I had a set of "green" hoses on the car and it's the first time in my life I've ever had a radiator hose fail. On closer inspection, the "green" hoses appear to NOT have any interior reinforcement, only an exterior embedded mesh fabric that must be useless.

I believe my old hoses were about 4 years old and I think they should have lasted a bit longer. The new hose set (which will go on this weekend) are "Samco" from Rimmer Bros, U.K.
They appear to be double reinforced silicone. See pics below. I hope, (for what they cost), they last a LOT longer than the crappy, (MHO), "green" hoses.

    Cheers,

    Wolf

I put the Samco hoses on my car about 5 years ago. At the time you could only get them from British Heritage. The top radiator hose didn't fit and I had to send them all sorts of pictures and documentation from TRf and Moss showing the differences before they'd believe me..... bottom line was they didn't make a top hose for the later TR6.... and they never offered to refund any money.... and they stopped selling to kit to anyone in the states! Hope Rimmer got it right.

Hey Bobby, ya scared me for a minute. I went out to the garage and much to my relief, it looks like a perfect fit. The upper hose is just about 3/4" too long so I should be able to get a perfect final length after cutting.

      Cheers,

      Kevin

I had a 2 year old lower radiator hose fail on the way home from Pittrace/Kastner Cup last year and decided to try a silicone hose set. I also ordered from Rimmer. Rimmer doesn't make them, so they are not to blame but they also didn't stand behind them when I discovered that 2 of the hoses were made to the wrong inner diameter and didn't fit properly. It's a Samco problem, as the kit has the right part numbers molded into the hoses, they just weren't made properly. I was able to force them on and use them, and had no issues on my recent 2500+ road TRip.

My upper green failed on the way to a car show earlier this month. Fortunately there was a restoration shop nearby with an affinity for TR6s and they had a replacement. The proprietor said the current crop of greens are not the quality they once were.

Green hoses are not reinforced at all. They look great when new but not being reinforced makes them scary in my book

Correct. They used to, but not anymore. I had the green hoses for years, then replaced them with black, reinforced hoses before going to Flagstaff a few years back. I've since bought a complete set of silicon hoses, directly from the manufacturer in England, literally, a mom and pop outfit.

My green hoses don't look so good anymore both from an aesthetic point of view (they're probably 5-6 years old) or from a condition point of view (upper is bulging at the clamps).

Since the driving season is rapidly coming to an end here I'll leave them till spring but come spring I'll be replacing them all. Would have gone with new green ones but after reading this thread...Uhhh not so much.

I replaced all my coolant, heater and vacuum hoses six+ years ago with Samco “green” hoses I purchased from the British Motor Heritage. I couldn’t be happier. Samco’s lifetime warranty only applies if you use their hose clamps. Their clamps are smooth and don’t cut the hose like a regular clamp. My kit included the two shorty heater hoses in the passenger footwell (don't forget about doing these also!). I purchased all my vacuum hoses from a specialty GB performance supplier (Amber Performance https://www.amber-performance.co.uk ) including a wire reinforced Samco hose to use for my brake booster. Not a low budget upgrade (approx $200 in 2013), but well worth it in my humble opinion.
