  • Trying to align front and back splines in my J Type Over drive

Hi Guys and Gals. I've just rebuilt a transmission compatible to a J type OD. I had the OD rebuilt. When I received the OD from the builder the the two sets of splines in the OD had become misaligned. When dropping it down on the tranny the front splines mate perfectly but it will not drop down the last half inch because the back splines are offset to the front. The two sets of splines appear to be locked together. They rotate together. Has anybody had this problem? Ideas/options?

I had a similar issue when overhauling my A type O/D. I fashioned a tool out of some pvc pipe and a zip tie- essentially a key to reach in and tweak the rear splines. Took maybe two tweaks to get the rear splines visually lined up and that was it. Should be a pic in a long thread called “overdrive surgery”or something like that. Since there’s a unidirectional clutch back there (in the A type at least), maybe the two sets of splines are locked together when turning in one direction. Try rotating the rear splines independently in both directions (with the right tool of course!)
